T

he Jakarta traffic police netted 219 motorists violating the odd-even traffic policy during the first morning of its implementation on Tuesday.

Violators received red tickets and had their driver’s license (SIM) and vehicle ownership documents (STNK) confiscated by the traffic police for not complying with the policy.

The implementation of the odd-even license plate policy started after a month-long trial. The policy applies every weekday from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7: 30 p.m. along the same thoroughfares as the previous three-in-one traffic policy. No data has been provided yet on the number of violators in the evening.

Under the policy, private vehicles with license plates ending in even numbers can use the roads on even number dates, and vice versa for license plates ending in odd numbers.

Police focused on the areas where most violations occurred during the trial, such as the Senayan traffic circle, Indosat traffic circle and Oteva traffic lights. Most violators reportedly claimed that they had forgotten the implementation started on Tuesday.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Awi Setiyono said police would strengthen their enforcement of the policy as it had proven to be effective. During the trial, traffic congestion decreased by 20 percent and the number of Transjakarta passengers also went up, he said. (rin)
