ain in Central Sulawesi started Monday night and continued Tuesday, causing flooding in several locations like Tolitoli regency. The coastal city was inundated with water from the rain and tidal flooding.
Zainal Alidullah, an official at the Tolitoli administration, said floods hit houses and offices. Main streets were severely flooded, as well.
“The highest levels of flooding were in the prison,” he said.
More flooding was seen at Panasakan subdistrict and the Tolitoli shopping center, where water levels reached as high as an adult’s waist.
Central Sulawesi resident, Longki Djanggola, said the combination of rain and tidal water made the flooding even more severe. “I have received information that several subdistricts in Tolitoli were also flooded. I asked the residents of Tolitoli to think about natural disaster safety measures.”
The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency in Palu, the provincial capital, stated that the rain and rise of the sea tides were the result of the Meranti tropical cyclone. Meranti caused intense rain storms in North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo and Central Sulawesi. (evi)
