s many as 16,000 participants took part in the Mandiri Jakarta Marathon 2016, which had several categories and started and ended at the National Monument (Monas) on Sunday.

About 2,500 people participated in the full marathon category with a 42.195-kilometer-long track, 3,500 people in the half marathon, 4,500 in the 10k and 5,500 in the 5k.

Three hundred children age 7 to 10 participated in the Maratoonz, a one-kilometer running distance designed for children.

The number of participants was 60 percent higher than in 2013 marathon in which  10,000 people participated, marathon director Iye Rohadian said as reported by Antara news agency on Sunday.

The race began at 5 a.m. from Monas in Central Jakarta and passed several tourist spots and landmark buildings such as Kota Tua, Fatahillah Museum, the Jakarta Cathedral, the Istiqlal Grand Mosque and the Hotel Indonesia traffic Circle before returning to Monas.

The event, sponsored by state lender Bank Mandiri, was aimed at spark interesting in sport and  boosting the economy.

"We want to increase active participation in supporting the government in expanding the base of future sportsmen as well as strengthen the acceleration of people's economy," Bank Mandiri president director Kartika Wirjoatmodjo said as reported by Antara. (rin)
