A fire broke out at the Grand Paragon hotel in Taman Sari, West Jakarta, on Monday, killing two people presumed to have died of suffocation.
The deceased victims were a security officer and a staffer.
The fire started in a karaoke room at 9:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene in 32 fire trucks and extinguished the fire at 12 p.m.
Security officer Isaka, 50, reportedly died after he tried to help extinguish the fire.
“He is thought to have died of suffocation after breathing in the smoke. The body is now at the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Central Jakarta,” said Taman Sari Police head Adj. Sr. Comr. Nasriadi.
He added that police were conducting an investigation into the incident.
