he Depok Transportation Agency in West Java is studying the possibility of creating lanes dedicated to motorcycles and public minivans, locally known as angkots, along some thoroughfares to ease traffic congestion in the city.
Sariyo Sabani, the agency’s safety guidance and traffic order division head, said the study would focus on implementation issues and the supporting facilities that would be needed to make the concept a reality.
“We plan to design the lanes on the left part of the roads in order to reduce traffic congestion,” he said as reported by Wartakotalive.com on Wednesday.
He added that the idea was triggered by the exponential growth of motorcycles in the city.
“According to our plan, this year we will try it on Jl. Margonda. After that we will apply it to the city’s other main thoroughfares,” he said.
He hopes that by creating dedicated lanes, the agency can better manage angkot drivers, who often drive carelessly.
“This is all related to passenger safety and traffic order. As we have seen, many angkot drivers do not abide by the traffic rules. This is dangerous and creates congestion,” he said. (fac)
