t least twelve people died in a head-on collision on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road on Monday in the first big road accident of this year’s busy Idul Fitri mudik (exodus) season, prompting the police to evaluate their traffic interventions to ensure no further incidents occur.
The crash took place at around 7:00 a.m. at kilometer 58 of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road in Karawang, West Java.
It started when a Suzuki GranMax minibus heading to Cikampek in a counterflow lane changed lanes and drove into oncoming traffic, reportedly to reach the road’s shoulder on the other side of the counterflow lane.
The minibus hit an oncoming bus that reportedly was unable to stop in time.
A third car, a mini-SUV behind the bus, failed to swerve away from the crash and hit the bus, according to the police and the bus driver.
Television footage showed that the minibus and the mini-SUV were wrecked and completely burned in the aftermath of the accident.
Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy said all 12 casualties were onboard the minibus.
