National scene: Community centers to fight drug abuse

S

ocial Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa said on Sunday that community-based rehabilitation centers (RBMs) was one mechanism to fight drug abuse.

β€œ[The establishment of] RBMs is one effective way to combat drug abuse, like the use of psychotropics and other addictive substances,” the minister said on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Khofifah made the remarks after inaugurating an education and social welfare training center in the province.

According to her, drug abuse has become an alarming issue in the country, particularly after the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) released data on the turnover of the narcotics trade.

β€œIn 2016, the turnover of the narcotics trade reached Rp 72 trillion [US$5.4 billion] with the number of victims totaling 5.8 million. This is a terrible fact which terrorizes the people,” she said.
