ore than a thousand houses along the Ciliwung riverbank were inundated with water after the river overflow on Monday night. The water inundated the homes to a depth of between 10 and 60 centimeters.
Approximately 3,800 people have to suffer the floods but most of them chose to stay, some in the second floor of their houses, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Tuesday.
“Most of the residents refuse to be evacuated except if the floods are high enough and could risk their lives,” Sutopo said in a statement.
Residents around the Ciliwung riverbank experience floods every year. Hence, if the Ciliwung flood waters are rising, an early warning will be delivered to the residents through text message, WhatsApp, sirens and announcements from mosques.
