resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated Hatta Ali as the Supreme Court chief justice for the 2017-2022 term on Wednesday.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla and several Cabinet members also attended the ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta.

The internal voting process involving Supreme Court justices on Feb. 14 re-elected Hatta with 38 out of 47 votes in favor of him. He beat other candidates Mukti Arto and Andi Samsan Nganro.

However, Hatta, 67, will only serve a three-year second term because he must retire at the age of 70 years in accordance with the 2009 Law on the Supreme Court.

Born in Pare-Pare, South Sulawesi, Hatta is the court's 13th chief. (hol/bbs)
