resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has officially invited businesspeople for the second time to take part in the government’s flagship tax amnesty as the program will end in a month.
Speaking to thousands of business players, Jokowi said the government held the public campaign as a form of “farewell” to the tax amnesty to remind taxpayers that the month of March would be their last chance to declare their assets and enjoy lower penalty rates at 5 percent.
“This is the last chance, I'll remind you. The Finance Ministry is preparing government regulations for taxpayers who decide not to join the tax amnesty,” he said on Tuesday, referring to law enforcement efforts that would take place after the program ended as stipulated in the Tax Amnesty Law.

Article 18 in the Tax Amnesty Law stipulates that any undeclared asset owned between Jan. 1, 1985 and Dec. 31, 2015 will be considered as additional income and subject to a costly penalty, even three years after the program has finished.
As of Wednesday, penalty payments in tax amnesty reached Rp 105 trillion (US$7.87 billion) of the targeted Rp 165 trillion. Meanwhile, total declared assets reached Rp 4.41 quadrillion with Rp 145 trillion recorded as committed repatriation.
During his speech, Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) chairman Hariyadi Sukamdani expected better service from tax officers in the tax amnesty as there remained some technical issues on the ground that could discourage taxpayers from joining the program. (bbn)
