The Jakarta Police are conducting Operation Simpatik Jaya on March 1-21 to reduce traffic accidents and educate the public on road safety.
Some 2,000 police officers were deployed for the operation to promote safe and disciplined traffic. “The success of the operation will be measured by the decrease in traffic accidents,” the Jakarta Police vice chief Brig. Gen. Suntana said on Wednesday.
Since the three-week operation aimed to prevent people from violating traffic regulations, the police would refrain from issuing tickets and would instead work to increase public awareness.
“It’s an educative operation. It will be implemented in stages, maybe during the first and second weeks [of the operation] we will only remind offenders. Only in the last week are we likely to issue tickets,” Suntana said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.
However, Jakarta Police’s traffic division vice director, Sr. Comr. Indra Jafar, said the police would take action according to the degree of offenses.
“If the offenders cause serious danger, such as driving against the flow of traffic, we must issue them a ticket because the driver may repeat their action if we simply remind them,” Indra said.
