T

he Jakarta administration demolished over 31 illegal buildings under a North Jakarta toll road on Friday to make way for the development of a child-friendly integrated public space (RPTRA).

Officers from the public order agency (Satpol PP), local police and military were present during the demolition under the Wiyoto Wiyono toll road in Warakas subdistrict, Tanjung Priok, although no resistance was seen during the process.

“We announced the demolition plan a long time ago to street vendors and illegal building’ owners. We hope the plan to build an RPTRA will be successfully realized,” Warakas subdistrict chief Sri Suhartini said as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

Tanjung Priok Police chief Comr. France Siregar said his team was monitoring the location to ensure security before Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama led the cornerstone-laying ceremony to mark the beginning of the RPTRA’s development on Saturday.

This was not the first time the administration has demolished properties in the area. Some 200 semi-permanent properties were knocked down on Aug. 11 last year.
