esidents living near Ciliwung River in East Jakarta have taken refuge at a cemetery after their houses were inundated by water from the overflowing river. The incident forced them to abandon their homes in the middle of the night.

The inhabitants of Kampung Arus in the subdistrict of Kramat Jati were ready to leave when the floods hit their settlement at 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

“The residents have prepared for the floods since Tuesday night, after they received an early warning on the increased water level at the Katulampa floodgate [in Bogor, West Java], due to heavy rain,” said local community unit (RW) head, Juanda, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com.

The residents evacuated themselves to a nearby public cemetery when the water level increased to more than 1 meter.

Seven districts and eight subdistricts in South Jakarta and East Jakarta have been affected by floods, with water levels between 10 centimeters and 1 meter, the Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) stated on Wednesday. (wnd)
