t least two people have died and hundreds have been displaced by severe flooding in several regions of Central Java and East Java, in the latest string of hydrometeorological disasters triggered by extreme weather.

Thirty-eight-year-old Warsilah and her 10-year-old daughter died in a flash flood that struck their home in Wangandowo village, Pekalongan, Central Java, on Wednesday night.

The flooding destroyed dozens of houses and forced some 60 residents to flee to temporary shelters.

Meanwhile, Central Java’s provincial capital Semarang saw torrential downpours and thunderstorms throughout Wednesday that caused flooding in major parts of the city, including the Kota Lama area and Tawang Station.

The floodwaters reached up to 80 centimeters in depth in several areas, said Semarang Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) operations head Endro Pudyo Martanto on Thursday.

The inundation of Tawang Station forced state-owned railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) to cancel four train services connecting Semarang with other cities, such as Surakarta, also in Central Java, and Surabaya in East Java. The company also rerouted 10 train services to the southern route out of Semarang, via Surakarta and Yogyakarta.
