bout 70 garbage stalls and three motorcycles owned by garbage collectors were destroyed in a fire in Pondok Bambu, Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, on Monday morning.

The fire is thought to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. It happened while the collectors were sorting garbage at a temporary trash disposal site (TPS) on Jl. Kejaksaan. No fatalities were reported.

Jamal, a local resident, said he thought it was just trash burning, “At first it was just smoke, and then it became bigger. It turned out that it was the garbage collectors’ stalls located toward the back of Pondok Bambu TPS that was on fire,” Jamal said as quoted by beritajakarta.com.

“We deployed 12 firetrucks and took about one hour to extinguish the fire,” the operations head of the East Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency, Gatot Sulaiman, said. (dev)
