Beware of anti-illegal levy task force: Jokowi Stay relaxed: President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo (second right) enjoys a relaxed dinner with several Cabinet members, including Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung (left), Health Minister Nila Moeloek (fourth right) and Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani (third right) at a food stall at the Hongkong Market in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, on March 17. P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo reminded government institutions locally and nationally to ensure that they continued to give the public good and speedy service.

“I remind you all to be careful. Serve the people as well as possible because the Saber Pungli illegal levy eradication task force has continued to work,” he said at the Hongkong Market in Singkawang, West Kalimantan, on Friday evening.

Jokowi made the statement after he received a report on an anti-illegal fee operation, during which personnel from the East Kalimantan Police’s special crime investigation directorate and the National Police’s criminal investigation division (Bareskrim) revealed Rp 6.1 billion (US$ 457,031.52) worth of illegal fee practices at the Samudra Sejahtera loading and unloading workers cooperative (Komura) in Samarinda.

“Rp 6.1 billion is a huge amount of money. It must have been long targeted. Maybe it’s only the tip of the iceberg. So I remind you, please be careful,” said Jokowi.

He further said the government was striving to increase its public service delivery through some improvements. Now, illegal levies continue to be one of the big problems that have hampered the government and its service to the people.

“We need to remind all parties that we want to improve the existing system,” said Jokowi.

He hoped the Samarinda case could become a lesson for the government to work proportionally and professionally so that Indonesia would be free from any illegal levy practices.

Created last year, the Saber Pungli team aims to eradicate illegal levies in government and the public service sector. (mrc/ebf)
