T

hree days prior to the Jakarta gubernatorial election runoff, on April 16, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama are scheduled to inaugurate Daan Mogot Grand Mosque in West Jakarta, an official has said.

Jakarta secretary Saefullah said the first city-owned grand mosque would be named after KH Hasyim Asyari, a renowned ulema who founded Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the country’s largest Muslim organization.

“The inauguration has been set for April, 16. It’s already confirmed that [Ahok] together with Pak Jokowi, will officially open the mosque,” Saefullah said at City Hall on Monday.

He added that Ahok, who is currently on leave for the election campaign, would have returned to office by then.

Saefullah said the mosque, built on a 16,985-square-meter site, would be equipped with an Islamic center to accommodate Islamic scholars in the city.

The mosque, which will be able to accommodate 12,500 worshippers, will also have other supporting facilities, such as office space for the mosque management, a function hall with a capacity for 1,000 people and a room for educational purposes.

The idea to establish the mosque came during the administration of Jokowi in 2012, when he was still serving as Jakarta governor. (fac)
