he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is deepening an investigation into suspected bribery related to the placement and promotion of officials in the Klaten administration, in which it has named non-active Klaten regent Sri Hartini a suspect in the case.
“Our investigators have […] deepened their investigation into more alleged bribery either related to the delivery of aspiration funds or the implementation of projects handled by working units in the Klaten administration,” KPK spokesman Febri Diansyah said in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by news agency Antara.
On Monday, the KPK questioned 13 witnesses for graft suspect Sri Hartini related to indications that she had accepted several more bribes in the case.
“We hope the investigation process of the Klaten regent can be completed by the end of April, so that the case can be brought to the next level,” said Febri.
The KPK named Sri Hartini a suspect after she was allegedly caught red-handed in an operation in Klaten on Dec. 30, 2016. During the raid, investigators confiscated Rp 2.08 billion (US$156,391), $5,700 and S$2,035 – all in cash – and a book containing notes on the sources of the money.
The Klaten regent is charged with violating the 1999 Corruption Law, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and Rp 250 million in fines. (hol/ebf)
