T

he judicial panel of the Mungkid District Court in Magelang regency, Central Java, on Friday sentenced a 16-year-old student of senior high school SMA Taruna Nusantara to nine years in prison after declaring him guilty of killing his schoolmate, Krisna Wahyu Nurachmad, 15.

The judges delivered their verdict in a session closed to the public because the defendant was still categorized as a child. The sentence imposed by the panel, led by judge Aris Gunawan, was one year less than what the prosecution had demanded.

Mungkid District Court spokesperson Eko Supriyanto said during the trial the defendant acted politely and spoke frankly. “What mitigated his sentence is that he is still young and it is hoped he can improve his behaviour in the future,” said Eko.

“Factors that worsened his sentence were that his act was very sadistic and really hurt the feelings of the victim’s family members. It was a premeditated murder.”

In a previous session, the prosecution team, led by Eko Hening Wardono, demanded the judges sentence the boy to 10 years in prison. He was found guilty of committing premeditated murder, violating Article 340 of the Criminal Code.

Krisna was killed early in the morning on March 31 when he was sleeping on his bed.

Responding to the verdict, Eko said he and his team would study it first before deciding whether they would file an appeal. “We have seven days before making a decision over the ruling,” he said. (ebf)
