T

he Jakarta Police have opened an investigation into one of its officers, Sr. Adj. Comr. Bintoro, for allegedly extorting billions of rupiah from two suspects in a murder case, marking the latest in a series of extortion scandals to hit the National Police in recent months.

The case came to public attention after head of Indonesia Police Watch, Sugeng Teguh Santoso, recently told the press that two murder suspects, identified only as AN and MBH, had filed a civil lawsuit against Bintoro on Jan. 6.

Both suspects are demanding Bintoro return Rp 5 billion (US$309,000) that they allegedly paid him in exchange for closing the investigation into the death of a 16-year-old girl in South Jakarta last year.

They are also seeking the return of a Lamborghini and a Harley Davidson, which they claim Bintoro took from the crime scene for his personal use.

Bintoro was leading the South Jakarta's Police Criminal Investigation Department when the alleged incident took place.

“In their lawsuit, the suspects argue that the criminal investigation into their case is still ongoing, even though they allegedly paid Bintoro and had given him the vehicles,” Sugeng said on Sunday as reported by Kompas.id.
