A baby boy was born aboard a ship sailing from Sampit in East Kalimantan to Surabaya, East Java, on Monday.
The baby and his mother, 21-year-old Maria Elevina, who boarded the vessel belonging to shipping company PT. Dharma Lautan Utama (DLU) with her husband Ferinandos, 23, were in a healthy condition after the birth.
The manager of DLU’s office at Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya, Donie Surya Putra, said the baby had been born when the ship was near Bawean Island, East Java, early on Monday morning.
“She was eight months pregnant when the baby was born. The medical team on board helped her, and the mother and the baby are healthy” he said, as reported by antaranews.com.
Immediately after the boat arrived at Tanjung Perak Port in the afternoon, the medical team brought Maria and her son to the Primasatya Husada Citra hospital to undergo a health examination.

Donie said the baby was named Chandra Kirana, based on suggestions from crew members.
“The parents had not prepared a name for the baby, therefore, we gave them suggestions and they accepted them,” he said.
Maria and Ferinandos were on their way to their hometown in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to spend the Idul Fitri holiday season. They had planned to continue overland to Manggarai from Surabaya.
However, after the birth, the couple opted to stay at a relative’s house in Kapasan, Surabaya. (ecn/bbs)
