t least one woman was injured and 60 homes were damaged when an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit an area bordering Padang Sidempuan municipality and South Tapanuli regency in North Sumatra on Friday morning.
The earthquake lasted almost 20 seconds but was not felt in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
“A 73 year-old woman identified as Masitoh Ritonga was injured in Sitaratoit village in South Tapanuli,” Sutopo said in a statement, adding that 60 homes in six villages were damaged in the earthquake, which occurred at 8:25 a.m.
A 3.5-multitude aftershock jolted the areas at 8:57 a.m. and another one of 4.1 magnitude at 9:11 a.m. No tsunami warning was announced.
“Regional disaster mitigation agency officials are still monitoring and collecting data,” he said.
