Guess what?: Ramon Papana claims trade mark for ‘open mic’

S

tand-up comedy theorist Ramon Papana has sparked controversy after claiming ownership of the term “open mic,” which refers to performance activities done by comics to try out new material.

The Indonesian comedy scene turned serious on Wednesday after an image announcing Ramon’s claims over the generic term circulated on social media.

Apparently, the claim was not one of Ramon’s cringe-worthy jokes as the Indonesian Trademark Bureau (DJKI) officially listed it on its official site. However, the DJKI website says that Ramon owns the trademark for the term “Open Mic – Indonesia,” not “open mic.”

Many stand-up comedians, old and new, expressed their ire toward Ramon and one of them was Soleh Solihun.

“Because the communities of @StandUpIndo all over Indonesia are not allowed to use the term ‘open mic’ without the permission of the trademark’s owner, use the term ‘not open mic’ instead,” Soleh said on his Twitter account in response to Ramon’s claim.
