Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has officiated the groundbreaking of the Muara Angke floating restaurant in North Jakarta.
The restaurant would not only become a new iconic culinary destination in the capital, but would also afford visitors a view of the Jakarta Bay, Djarot said in his speech at the event on Sunday.
He expressed his expectation that all vendors and the public would participate in maintaining the floating restaurant.
“I hope once the construction is completed, people will also have a different mentality. We can’t live in a dirty environment,” he said, as quoted by kompas.com.

The floating restaurant, the shape of which resembles a manta ray, is expected to attract more visitors and eventually boost income for local fishermen and vendors. The two-story restaurant measuring 4,458 square meters will accommodate 29 vendors who usually sell their roasted seafood dishes in the Muara Angke area, which is famous for fresh fish caught by North Jakarta fishermen.
“With improvements, I am sure everyone will come, not only to enjoy our seafood, but also to promote [the restaurant] in Indonesia and in the world,” he said.
The construction was carried out by PT Astoria Perkasa Nusantara but funded by PT Kepland Investama as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project in return for a higher building-floor coefficient permit. (rin)
