n alleged group suicide of a family of four in North Jakarta has garnered nationwide attention and prompted calls for bigger efforts to prevent more cases following increasing cases of suicides in the country.
The nation was left in shock by the news that the entire family – the parents and their two teenage children – allegedly committed suicide together by jumping from the 21st floor of an apartment in Penjaringan, North Jakarta, earlier this month.
The disturbing nature of the incident has left many questions unsolved, including the motives that led the family to take their lives together.
Footage from the CCTV camera inside the elevator of the building showed that each family member was “seemingly prepared” and ready to jump, said Penjaringan Police chief Comr. Agus Ady Wijaya, Antara reported.
The family of four came with their car to the apartment complex late, at around 4 p.m. on March 9.
They had reportedly been long-time residents at the apartment, their former neighbors told Kompas.id on Mar. 10. The neighbors also mentioned the family’s financial struggles and how the parents would borrow money from others, hinting at a possible reason behind the suicide.
However, the police brushed off such speculation, saying they were still investigating the motives and had yet to reach a conclusion.
