resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Monday received a courtesy call from Uzbek’s deputy prime minister and minister of agriculture and water resources, Mirzaev Zoyir, and his entourage at the State Palace.
During the meeting, Jokowi secured commitments from Uzbekistan to improve bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture and fisheries and to support Indonesia’s bid for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2019 to 2020 period.
Before meeting with Jokowi, Mirzaev also met with Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman and Maritime and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti in Jakarta.
Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said that on the sidelines of China’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) summit in Beijing in May, Jokowi met with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Monday’s meeting was a follow-up to those talks.
“The cooperation over agriculture and fisheries could become priority areas of cooperation between Indonesia and Uzbekistan. Therefore, [Shavkat] sent the deputy PM to Indonesia to study the development of agriculture and fisheries in Indonesia,” Retno said.
She added both countries would develop food security programs in agriculture and aquaculture because Uzbekistan is a landlocked country.
