oso Regent Darmin Sigilipu in Central Sulawesi urged the Health Ministry to follow China’s method of handling cases of Schistosomiasis, as the country was deemed successful in significantly reducing the parasitic flatworm disease rate.
To cure Schistosomiasis, China established a special department at the National Institute for Parasitic Disease and Control (NIPD), Darmin said.
“The department integrated all institutions, from the central government to administrations at the village level. In Poso, the diseases were only handled by the health agency,” he told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Invited by the World Health Organization (WHO), Darmin visited China for a week to learn how the country handled Schistosomiasis. “In 1950, 30 million Chinese residents suffered from Schistosomiasis, but with the establishment of the department, the figure now is nearly zero,” he said.
