A Mount Sinabung child refugee was killed in a road accident on Monday.

Baron Yansen Sigebang, a junior high school student from Kutarayat village, Namanteran district, Karo regency, North Sumatra, died after the truck he was riding in overturned in an area around Sigarang-garang village at noon on Monday. Dozens of other students in the truck were injured.

Aji Yudiana Sitepu, 16, a student from Kutarayat village who survived the accident, said the tragedy began when a group of 50 students departed from their shelter in Kutarayat village to their school in Berastagi at noon.

Aji said they travelled in a pickup truck provided by the Karo Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).

When the truck passed an area in Sigarang-garang village, Aji said, the left side of the road was a bit slippery and the driver could not control the vehicle. The truck rolled over twice on the roadside.

“One passenger was killed in the incident. He was pinned under the truck. Other passengers were injured after they fell down from the truck,” said Aji.

Natanael Perangin-angin of the Karo BPBD said all the victims of the accident were treated at the Kabanjahe and Efarina hospitals. (ebf)
