t least four people were killed on Saturday evening when a trailer truck hit nine motorcycles and seven cars after an alleged brake failure near the Bawen toll gate in Semarang regency, Central Java.
The multiple-vehicle collision occurred at around 6:30 p.m. after the truck, which was heading to Salatiga, exited the Semarang-Surakarta Toll Road.
The driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle when driving on a long downhill road that ended in a T-junction, where vehicles and motorcycles were stopped at a red light.
The truck failed to stop and crashed into the vehicles, according to Central Java Police traffic director Sr. Comr. Agus Suryo Nugroho.
"We suspect the truck’s brakes were faulty," Agus told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.
Three people died on the scene, and another was pronounced dead at At-Tin Hospital in Bawen. Two of the deceased have been identified as Rudi Oky Candra and Aditya Dwiky Hartanto, both from Pabelan, Semarang regency.
At least 27 people, including children, were injured in the multiple-vehicle collision. They were taken to four different hospitals in the regency, including At-Tin Hospital, to receive medical care.
