View all search resultsresident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said he wants Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan to prioritize the development of slum areas in the capital.
The newly appointed governor and his deputy Sandiaga Uno met with Jokowi at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday, discussing various issues about the capital city.
However, the President emphasized that slum areas should be among the Jakarta administration’s main concerns, Anies said after the meeting.
“The President did not highlight a specific location. However, slum areas must be prioritized because the President was fully aware […] that there were 220 poor urban villages in the capital,” he said.
Anies then said that the administration would unlikely evict those living in poor villages and instead referred to a “land consolidation” concept, in which the administration planned to start a vertical housing construction project.
“Hence, they could still live on the land but the slum conditions would be made clean and comfortable and it would be a healthy place,” he said.
Also during the occasion, Jokowi emphasized the importance of communication given that he succeeded in developing the Pluit Reservoir in North Jakarta.
