T

he VI Regional Operator (Daop) Yogyakarta of state railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has prepared six additional trains to serve passengers departing from Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Central Java) to Jakarta, Bandung (West Java) and Surabaya (East Java).

The six trains will be added to 13 regular trains, which comprise Taksaka morning and evening lines, Sancaka, Lodaya, Argo Lawu and Argo Dwipangga lines, with a total capacity of around 13,000 passengers per day.

Argo Lawu and Argo Dwipangga trains will serve the Gambir Station (Jakarta) – Solo Balapan (Surakarta) route while Lodaya will serve the Bandung Station – Solo Balapan route. Meanwhile, Sancaka is ready to carry passengers traveling from Tugu Station in Yogyakarta to Gubeng Station in Surabaya and vice versa.

“We predict the number of passengers during the Christmas and New Year holidays will increase by around 4 to 6 percent compared to normal days,” KAI Daop VI Yogyakarta spokesperson Eko Budiyanto said at Purwosari Station on Thursday.

He further said the holiday season was expected to start on Dec. 21 and end on Jan. 7. He predicted homebound travel in train stations within the Daop VI working area would peak on Dec. 24 and on Jan.1 and 2.

“Passengers can purchase tickets for extra trains starting from Nov. 1 while regular tickets can be bought 90 days before the departure,” he said.

To anticipate unexpected incidents during the holiday season, Eko said KAI was ready to dispatch 91 additional officials to train crossings and other locations prone to security disruptions. (ebf)
