baby Bornean orangutan has been born as part of a breeding program at Bandung Zoo, West Java.
“The zoo’s veterinarians oversaw the birth of the baby, which weighs around 0.7 kilograms,” the zoo’s spokesperson Sulhan Syafi’i said on Saturday.
Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil named the female baby Cinta Lestari.
“The name means we can make the Earth sustainable [lestari] through our love [cinta] for the planet,” he said.
The zoo is now home to eight orangutans, including two Sumatran orangutans, thanks to the successful breeding program. The oldest is a 33-year-old Bornean orangutan named Ojon.
The last time a baby orangutan was born in the zoo was in 2010.
“We have been waiting for this [birth],” Sulhan said.
The zoo found itself in the public spotlight last year following the death of a Sumatran elephant and after videos and photos of skinny sun bears begging for food from visitors went viral, raising concerns about the zoo’s management.
