treet vendors on Jl. Jatibaru Raya near Tanah Abang Market in Central Jakarta are reportedly renting out tents that were provided for them by the city administration.
Speaking to tribunnews.com on Thursday, one vendor admitted he had paid Rp 3 million (US$210) to rent a tent for a month. His brother, he said, was renting one for Rp 4 million a month.
“The rental fees vary,” the vendor said, adding that the owner of the tent had gotten it for free because he had a Jakarta ID card.
Separately, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said he had yet to receive a report on the matter and promised to launch an investigation.
“We will take firm actions if we find that [a vendor] has violated the rules,” Anies said.
The governor, who was inaugurated on Oct. 16 last year, instructed the closure of Jl. Jatibaru Raya to accommodate roughly 400 street vendors.
Angkot (public minivan) drivers in Tanah Abang have protested the new policy by staging several rallies. Hundreds of drivers claimed that their salaries had decreased by up to 50 percent since the implementation of the policy.
The administration is currently mulling over the possibility to open one lane of Jl. Jatibaru Raya for the public minivan. (vny)
