The Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency has announced that short circuits were the main cause of fires in the capital in 2017.
According to the agency’s data, 924 fires out of a total 1,471 last year broke out because of electrical short circuits.
“The majority of our society is not fully aware of how to use electricity safely,” said the agency’s spokesperson, Saepuloh, as quoted by tempo.co.
Saepuloh mentioned, for instance, that many people used one power outlet for many electronic devices, leading to a short circuit.
The 1,471 fires that occurred in the capital last year burned 505 buildings, 209 stores and 109 vehicles, among other things, resulting in material losses of roughly Rp 475 billion (US$33.2 million).
Saepuloh encouraged Jakartans to periodically check electrical connections at their houses to avoid potential fires. (vny)
