T

he Jakarta administration has dismantled a road median and removed trees that separate the fast and slow lanes on Jl. Sudirman in South Jakarta to make way for sidewalks.

“The median was dismantled last night and will be covered with a zinc roof so as not to disturb traffic,” the city’s Bina Marga road agency head, Yusmada Faizal, said on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The planning of the new arrangement was under review because it awaited Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan’s approval, Yusmada added.

The median will make way for a new road arrangement under the Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin sidewalk restoration plan. There will be four lanes for vehicles from the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle to the Senayan traffic circle in South Jakarta and a motorcycle lane that will be mixed with a regular bus lane on the left side of the road, which will be separated from the Transjakarta busway lane.

Anies said he would publicly announce by the end of February the new design of the long-planned sidewalk restoration to welcome the Asian Games.

The initial concept of the sidewalk restoration was drafted under the previous administration. However, Anies decided to change the concept to accommodate motorcycles.

The planned expanded sidewalks will also be a colorful haven for traditional art motifs and will be decorated with statues and other cultural objects.

The sidewalks in the Senayan area will be designed like a walk of fame featuring well-known athletes who will also interact with pedestrians at certain times. (wnd)
