Balinese Hindus began observing the four abstentions of the Hindu Day Of Silence, or Nyepi, on Saturday.

Starting from 6 a.m. local time, Hindus in the resort-laden island began observing amati geni (abstaining from lightning fires), amati karya (abstaining from work), amati lelungan (abstaining from traveling outside the family compound) and amati lelanguan (abstaining from entertainment).

They will observe the four abstentions until 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Traditional Balinese security guards, the pecalang, are securing their respective areas to ensure that nobody engages in activities outside their homes, state news agency Antara reported on Saturday.

Ngurah Rai International Airport in Tuban customary village, Badung, has been closed by officials during Nyepi.

There is also no telecommunication service operating in Bali during Nyepi, except for public services and emergencies, following an order by the Communications and Information Ministry on Wednesday. (mos/ahw)
