ormer president and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri visited the National Police headquarters on Wednesday to meet the police top brass ahead of her inauguration as the lead adviser of the Agency for the Implementation of State Ideology of Pancasila (BPIP).

During the meeting, Megawati discussed the agency’s future programs with the police’s elite, including police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian, said National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto.

“There is a large number of our personnel across the country — around 443,000 — who are deemed suitable to help the unit in promoting the state ideology of Pancasila,” Setyo said after the meeting, adding that both institutions might sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the future.

The BPIP, previously known as the Presidential Working Unit for the Implementation of the State Ideology of Pancasila (UKP-PIP), is tasked with enforcing Pancasila as the national ideology. It was established by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo last year following the rise of sectarianism in Jakarta during his gubernatorial election campaign.

On Wednesday, former vice president Try Sutrisno, who is another BPIP advisory board member, and BPIP head Yudi Latif, joined Megawati in her visit to the police headquarters.

Last week, Megawati had a similar meeting with Zulkifli Hasan, the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) speaker, at the House of Representatives complex in Jakarta. The two met to discuss the implementation guidelines for Pancasila and the Constitution.
