The Taipei Economic and Trade Office in Indonesia (TETO) and the Indonesian Council on World Affairs (ICWA) recently partnered up to organize a seminar titled “New Southbound Policy: Cooperation Potential Between Taiwan and Indonesia in Medical and Health Fields”.

About 200 people from business, governmental, academic and media institutions attended the May 9 seminar to exchange ideas on Indonesia’s current health policy and to stake out possible means for future cooperation.

Health cooperation between Taiwan and Indonesia has enormous potential. Taiwan’s “New Southbound Policy” is aligned with Indonesia’s policy of realizing the goal of a healthy ASEAN community.

Health Minister Nila Moeloek has sought to advance and improve the nation’s quality of health by establishing a national health care system and national health insurance.

In this field, Taiwan is one of the world’s leading countries with many capabilities and extensive experience. As such, Taiwan and Indonesia have enormous potential for working together and complementing each other.

John C. Chen, the TETO representative, pointed out that under the constitution of the World Health Organization (WHO), health was the right of every human being that basically does not see national boundaries, and does not distinguish between race, religion, political beliefs or socioeconomic conditions.

Taiwan is continuing its efforts in the research and prevention of infectious diseases and epidemics.

As such, it hopes to cooperate with Indonesia and other ASEAN countries by sharing experiences and technology, and by contributing to the international medical and healthcare world.

Chen further explained that improving medical and health cooperation was an important part of the “New Southbound Policy”. Taiwan is well-versed in national health insurance, medical technology and epidemic prevention techniques.

Therefore, the potential for bilateral cooperation between Taiwan and Indonesia is bright, creating mutual conditions and win-win solutions for both countries.

The main aim of the seminar was to ensure closer cooperation between Taiwan and Indonesia so that they can work together to create regional development and prosperity.
