roducts from Indonesian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) will be put on display at an ASEAN street bazaar in Singapore’s Wisma Geylang Serai Market until June 12.
The bazaar, which is part of the Singaporean government’s plan to promote the ASEAN community, was officially opened on Thursday by Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Senior Minister of State Mohammad Maliki Osman. Singapore is this year’s chair of ASEAN.
Indonesia’s ambassador to Singapore, Ngurah Swajaya, said that Indonesian SME products on offer include pearl and silver jewelry, clothing and handbags made from traditional fabrics and home appliances.
In addition to marketing Indonesian products and promoting Indonesia as the host of the 2018 Asian Games, the envoy said the event was a prime opportunity to reassure Singaporeans that Indonesia remains safe in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in East Java earlier this week.
“Bazaars like this should be used to show that the terrorist attacks in Surabaya do not faze Indonesia and that #WeAreNotAfraid,” Ngurah said in a press statement, making a reference to a social media hashtag popularized in the aftermath of a terrorist attack in Jakarta in 2016.
The ASEAN Street Bazaar is part of the annual Hari Raya Bazaar Festival, the largest and longest festival in Singapore, organized by the Geylang Serai Community Club. Every Ramadhan, Hari Raya Bazaar in Geylang attracts more than 1.4 million people.
