The Jakarta administration plans to launch its Betawi Is Me program just in time for the capital’s 491st birthday on June 22.
“The Betawi Is Me program, or One District One Betawi Cultural center, aims to preserve the native culture of Jakarta,” Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno said at City Hall on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
The program will be held in cooperation with the Benyamin Sueb foundation, named after the legendary Betawi comedian, actor and singer.
Each Jakarta district will have its own cultural center that will conduct Betawi art and culinary competitions.
“In principle, we want to make Betawi culture the so-called host of its own [city],” the deputy governor said. (vny)
