he Jakarta administration is required to provide public access to all available data on flooding across the capital, the Jakarta Public Information Commission (KIP Jakarta) declared in a recent ruling.
The commission ruled in favor of the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute (LBH Jakarta), which had filed a public information request pertaining to flooding to the city administration.
“The panel of commissioners orders [the Jakarta administration] to hand over all of the information requested by the plaintiff [LBH Jakarta],” KIP board of commissioners head Nelvia Gustina said on March 5 as reported by Antara.
The capital was hit by floods several times throughout 2020 and in early 2021 due to heavy rainfall and extreme weather. In February, more than 1,000 Jakartans were forced to evacuate from their homes after floodwaters reached up to 1.8 meters high in some parts of the southern and eastern areas of the city. Right after, LBH Jakarta filed a public information request on flood mitigation and prevention to the Jakarta administration.
The institute asked several questions, including on the city’s evaluations on the minimum standard of service for Jakartans affected and displaced during multiple floods in Jakarta throughout 2020, the city’s study on the social and economic impacts of floods, as well as the financial compensation given to affected residents.
After several discussions with the administration, LBH Jakarta deemed the information provided to be insufficient, prompting it to file a public information request with KIP Jakarta.
