man who had been reported missing after the engine of a wooden boat he was traveling in stalled on Lake Toba, Simalungun regency, North Sumatra, was found dead on Saturday afternoon.

Personnel from the joint Search and Rescue Agency located the body of Rahmat Dani, 28, a crew member of passenger vessel KM Ramos Risma Marisi, at 3:10 p.m. local time.

Rahmat is a resident of Sampuran village, Muara district, North Tapanuli regency.

Lake Toba Authority board head Arie Prasetyo, who participated in the search, said National Search and Rescue Agency divers found Rahmat’s body 10 meters under the lake’s surface. The body was later taken to a community health center in Samosir for an autopsy.

“His body was found not far from the location where he reportedly drowned when trying to push the boat, as the engine would not work,” Arie told The Jakarta Post on Saturday afternoon.

KM Ramos Risma Marisi encountered problems with its engine when it was sailing to Nainggolan Port in Samosir regency after it dropped off several passengers on Sibandang Island, North Tapanuli regency, on Friday evening.

Four crew members found safety when the boat was adrift after being hit by strong waves in Lake Toba.

Meanwhile, Rahmat went missing. A search operation to locate his whereabouts on Friday evening was halted because of bad weather. (ebf)
