Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution, who is also President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son-in-law, has said he will join the North Sumatra gubernatorial election in November.
Medan Mayor Bobby Nasution, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s son-in-law, has said he will join the North Sumatra gubernatorial election in November.
“Insyaallah [God willing], [I will run in the election],” Bobby said after attending a ceremony at the North Sumatra Police headquarters on Wednesday.
The mayor, however, stopped short of giving details on which political parties would back him in the race.
In January, defense minister and presumptive president-elect Prabowo Subianto promoted Bobby for the gubernatorial position during a campaign event in Medan.
“People might protest, saying that [Bobby] is too young [for the post], but as long as the North Sumatra people want him,” Prabowo said at the campaign event, which was attended by the mayor, as well as several political party leaders.
In November, Bobby was dismissed from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) for supporting Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo and vice presidential candidate Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son.
