lectronic payment firm PT Veritra Sentosa Internasional, known as PayTren, has signed an agreement with PT Info Media Digital, which manages news portal www.tempo.co, to buy 5 percent of the latter's shares.
PayTren corporate secretary Karila Trisye Hutami said the company had purchased 152, 881 shares in tempo.co for Rp 27.3 billion (US$1.89 billion).
“The investment cooperation between PayTren and tempo.co was agreed through good will with a spirit of respecting the principles of media independence and good corporate governance,” said Karila in a press release received by The Jakarta Post on Thursday.
PayTren, which was owned and founded by noted cleric Jusuf Mansur, obtained an official permit from Bank Indonesia on May 22.
Karila said through the investment, PayTren wanted to develop tempo.co to become a media platform that could present trustworthy news reports and could easily be accessed by the public.
Meanwhile, Yusuf Mansur said he expected more people to be interested in owning shares of a great media organization like Tempo. “More people need to own shares of a great media outlet like Tempo, not just enjoy its reports. PayTren is very enthusiastic [about buying Tempo’s shares],” he added. (bbn)
