olice have apprehended six individuals suspected of assaulting Ali Achmat Firmansyah, 20, at Lapangan Banteng park, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday.
However, police have declined to reveal the identities of the six suspects pending further investigation.
“We are still investigating the case. We are still not sure why he was assaulted,” said West Jakarta Police spokesperson Adj. Sr. Comr. Suyatno on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.
Ali was reportedly beaten and burned with cigarettes by unidentified security guards, who accused him of stealing the Rp 2.4 million (US$164) which he was carrying in cash on Saturday. He denied this saying the cash was his own income, after scavenging empty plastic bottles and used cardboard.
Ali’s father, TB Herman Wijaya, filed a complaint on Monday with the Central Jakarta Police over the assault on his son, who suffers from epilepsy. He said the police had obtained footage from a CCTV camera that had captured the incident.
Jakarta Social Agency took Ali to city-owned social rehabilitation center Bina Insan Bangun Daya in West Jakarta for treatment.
“During treatment, he had an epileptic seizure,” said Masyudi, the head of Bina Insan Bangun Daya, on Monday
Previously, Central Jakarta Police said they were questioning security staff from Lapangan Banteng and from the event organizer of the 2018 Flora and Fauna Expo, which was being held at the park. (nor)
