College student beaten to death for sleeping in North Sumatra mosque

At around 3:30 a.m. on Friday, a 57-year-old local resident living near the mosque, reportedly confronted Arjuna and told him he was not allowed to sleep there. When Arjuna refused to leave, the man allegedly became agitated and called four of his friends to the mosque.

olice have arrested five individuals following the death of a 21-year-old college student, who was reportedly beaten after being found sleeping inside the Sibolga Grand Mosque in North Sumatra.

Adj. Comr. Rustam Silaban, head of the Sibolga Police’s criminal investigation unit, said the suspects, identified only as ZPA, HBK, SSJ, REC and CLI, were arrested within three days of the assault.

“They have been charged under articles 338 and 170 of the Criminal Code for murder and fatal group assault, which carry a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison,” Rustam said on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.com.

He added that suspect SSJ faces an additional charge of aggravated theft for allegedly taking Rp 10,000 (60 US cents) from the victim’s pocket during the attack.

According to police, the victim, Arjuna Tamaraya, had been traveling from his hometown in Simeulue regency, Aceh, to Sibolga on Thursday night. During his journey, he stopped to rest and decided to sleep inside the Sibolga Grand Mosque.

The group then began assaulting Arjuna inside the prayer hall. They later dragged him outside, where his head reportedly struck the mosque’s steps. In front of the mosque, the suspects allegedly continued the attack, stomping on the victim's head and even hurling a coconut at his head.
