The shooting happened only two days after the Australian Embassy issued a travel warning citing concerns about potential terrorist attacks.
olice remain on the trail of three men involved in the shooting of two police officers on the Kanci-Pejagan toll road near Cirebon, West Java.
West Java police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko said bullet casings had been removed from the chest and hands of the officers, who were recovering from their wounds at the Mitra Plombon hospital in Cirebon.
"[The bullet casings] have been sent to forensics to determine what weapon was used," Trunoyudo said on Saturday, as quoted by kompas.com.
The two traffic officers, First Adj. Insp. Dodon Kusdianto and First Adj. Insp. Aiptu Widi Harjana, were conducting a routine patrol on Friday night when they encountered three men sitting on the side of the toll road.
The officers stopped, thinking the men might have needed assistance, but one of the men shot at Dodon and Widi as they approached.
The motive and identities of the men remain unknown, but police seem to suspect possible terrorist involvement as the National Police's Densus 88 counterterrorism squad has joined the investigation.
The shooting came only a day after a travel warning issued by the Australian government for visitors to Indonesia citing concerns about potential terrorist attacks.
"We continue to receive information indicating terrorists may be planning attacks in Indonesia," the warning said on the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade website, adding that Australia consular staff in Surabaya canceled their attendance in an event at Airlangga University due to said concerns.
