rivers trying to violate traffic rules in Jakarta will now have to think twice before deliberately skirting regulations, as the police’s traffic camera serves as the ultimate weapon to record any transgressions during the trial run of the Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system this month.

As evident in a post through its Instagram handle @tmcpoldametro, a CCTV recording showed how the plate number of a car not respecting traffic light signals was easily identified by zooming in on the footage. It was also detected that the driver was speeding.

“A traffic violation occurred on Monday, Oct. 22, at 4:22 a.m. on Jl. MH Thamrin. A [car] moving at a speed above 40 kilometers per hour was clearly and accurately caught on cameras,” the caption of the post read. The video has been viewed by more than 108,000 users as of Monday afternoon.

Several comments lauded the technology, some others criticized it, saying that there should be exceptions on certain hours and at certain areas notorious for crime.

“If I go home late at night, am I still required to wait until the light turns green? What if there are criminals around and I am all alone? It’s still understandable if it applies at the appropriate hours,” said user @rizkyamsr in the comment section.

Another user, @aaryoo, said the duration of the traffic lights should also be adjusted and that the red flashing should be made shorter to avoid getting attacked by criminals.  “Waiting for the light to turn green for a long time is risky, particularly for those who drive motorbikes.”

The ETLE trial took place on Jl. Sudirman and Jl. MH Thamrin.  (fac)
