Ganjar said that the ruling, read out by the council chairman Heddy Lugito on Monday, should be a reminder that no one could take control over how democracy is exercised in the country.
ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo on Monday praised the Elections Ethics Council (DKPP) ruling that found the chairman of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Hasyim Asy'ari guilty of an ethics violation for allowing President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's son Gibran Rakabuming Raka to run as vice presidential candidate.
Ganjar said that the ruling, read out by the council chairman Heddy Lugito on Monday, should be a reminder that no one could take control over how democracy is exercised in the country.
"I don't know yet what will be the punishment involved in the ruling. But I hope this will be a lesson for all of us," Ganjar was quoted by Antara as saying.
He added that the integrity of the Feb. 14 presidential election could be further undermined with the latest ruling as there was already a ruling from the Constitutional Court’s ethics council issued in November last year, which found then court chief justice Anwar Usman guilty of an ethics violation.
Anwar violated the court’s impartiality principle when he led the court to grant the petition to lower the mandatory 40-year age requirement for candidates to be able to run in presidential elections. Usman is married to President Jokowi's sister Idayati.
The Constitutional Court ruling effectively allowed Gibran to run in this year’s election.
Earlier on Monday, the DKPP issued its ruling that Hasyim had violated the KPU's ethical standards by accepting the application of Gibran to run as running mate for Gerindra Party presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto.
