A whale shark was seen swimming near the surface of the Jakarta Bay on Wednesday.

Citizen journalism Instagram account @jktinfo posted a 53-second video of the whale shark swimming in the Jakarta Bay near a boat on which the video-taker was filming.

Thousand Islands Environment Agency head Yusen Hardiman said whale sharks were often seen in the Jakarta Bay in the city’s northern coastal area.

“My subordinates often see them, almost five times in two years. It is considered common,” he said as quoted by kompas.com on Wednesday.

Yusen said the whale shark sighting was a sign that the ecosystem in the Jakarta Bay was still healthy.

“According to experts, the whale sharks come out [to the surface] because they are hungry and need to find plankton. The species prey on plankton and small shrimp,” he said.

Yusen added that whale sharks could be found 20 minutes from Marina Pier or Muara Angke Port, as well as in the waters near Onrust Island, Kecipir Island and Bidadari Island. He also ensured that whale sharks would not attack sailing boats around the waters. (gis)
